Position Objectives

Assist with a range of basic personal care and respite tasks for frail older people, who may be living alone or in constant care of relatives or significant others

Provide a range of personal care and domestic assistance tasks families who have the constant care responsibilities for a dependant child or adult, with a disability

Provide respite opportunities to relieve regular care(s)

Key Responsibilities

Personal / Home Care

Undertake a range of cleaning tasks to respond to client or carer

Undertake a range of personal assistance tasks, and other associated activities as determined by the assessed Service Plan, to assist the clients and/or family unit with daily living requirements

Assist the clients, as determined by the assessed Service Plan, with household/environmental tasks which are prioritized in relation to the personal care and support functions

Provide a range of Personal Care tasks based on assessed needs as determined by the assessed Service Plan, which enables the clients to maintain their desired standards of personal care and hygiene

Assist bathing, sponging or showering of clients

Assist with toileting

Assist with mobility such as getting out of bed, transferring to a commode or wheelchair

Assist client with self monitoring of medication

Assist with the development of prescribed exercise groups

Maintain a safe, hygienic living environment

Assist with meal, snack preparation based on nutritional requirements

Undertake shopping, banking, and correspondence as required

Escort with authority and where practicable, (for example to school, doctor, bus service, shopping or leisure activity)

Ensure assistance to clients, as determined by the assessed Service Plan, through social support and monitoring which enhances family and community interaction

Encourage and promote client’s independence and coping mechanisms

Monitor client service needs and ensure any changes are reported immediately

Assist with reading and recreational activities appropriate to the client’s preferences


Respite Care / Stay-Over / Support Services

Provide a break for primary carers from their caring responsibilities by caring for their family member
Provide Home Help and Personal Care Services during respite and sleep-over period.  Provide High needs attendant care for people with challenging behaviours and/or an intellectual or acquired disability
Provide Social support - An individualized activity such as an outing to the theatre, sporting event
Provide Overnight respite

Create, maintain and foster a safe work environment at all times
Follow safe work practices, procedures, instructions and rules at all times
Perform all duties in a manner that ensures personal health and safety, and that of others in the workplace and the general public
Report all hazards or incidents that can cause harm or that represent a threat to safety
Ensure compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations at all times
Follow up on hazard corrective actions

Judgement and Decision Making
The nature of this role is within clearly defined procedures with problem solving applied according to previously learned practices
Guidance and advice is available to reinforce learned practices
Implementation of emergency procedures may be required under supervisory direction

Key Selection Criteria

Specialist Skills and Knowledge

Specific skills and knowledge required to carry out the duties and functions of the position
Training, qualifications and significant skills gained in the aged and disability field (essential)
Awareness and support of the philosophies of healthy ageing and independent living
Ability to prioritize time and organize work according to directed tasks
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy
Observation and reporting skills
Flexibility and compatibility in providing non judgmental support to meet a wide range of assessed needs
Ability to undertake repetitious, physically demanding tasks
Willingness to undertake further training in the field
Basic administrative skills in completion of time sheets and travel records
A willingness to work towards continuous improvement as defined in the Company Quality Assurance system

Interpersonal Skills
Ability to communicate effectively and empathically with service consumers
Ability to work without direct supervision, but within directed framework
Ability to cooperate and communicate with the Coordinator, and other staff
Willingness to undertake training programs

Qualifications and Experience
Certificate III in Home and Community Care and /or Certificate IV in Disability (or equivalent qualification)
Basic understanding of first aid procedures, with completion of HLTFA301A
Apply first aid
Current Victorian Driver’s License, a reliable car, car insurance and a telephone are necessary
Consent to Check and Release Police Record
Working with Children Card
The ability to speak a language other than English is desirable
